How to Protect Your Nutrition While Taking a GLP-1

Most of the conversation around GLP-1 medications focuses on appetite and weight. What gets far less attention is the thing that matters just as much: protecting your nutrition while you are eating less. This is the part you actually have control over, and getting it right early makes the whole journey smoother.

I am Dr. Jennifer Mbianda. I am triple board-certified in family medicine, obesity medicine, and aesthetics, and I treat people on these medications every day. If you are just starting out, or even if you are a few months in, here is how I coach my patients to protect their nutrition.

Start with protein, and then take it more seriously than that

Protein is the single most important nutrient to protect on a GLP-1, and it is also the one most likely to fall short. When your appetite drops, protein tends to be the first thing to slide, partly because it is filling and partly because meat and other protein-rich foods can feel less appealing on these medications.

This matters more than most people realize. When you lose weight quickly while under-eating protein, more of that loss can come from muscle rather than fat. Protecting your protein intake helps protect your strength, your energy, and your metabolism. Make protein the anchor of every meal, and aim higher than feels natural, because your appetite is no longer a reliable guide to how much you need.

Hydrate like it is part of the plan, because it is

When you eat less, you drink less, since a real share of daily water comes from food. Add in any early nausea or looser stools, and mild dehydration is common. It shows up as fatigue, headaches, and brain fog, and it makes everything else feel harder.

Protect your muscle with resistance training

Nutrition and movement work together here. Resistance training is one of the most effective ways to signal to your body that it should hold onto muscle while you lose weight. It does not need to be complicated or intense. Two or three sessions a week of working your major muscle groups, paired with adequate protein, goes a long way toward keeping the strength you are trying to protect. If weight loss is the goal, muscle is the thing you do not want to lose along the way.

Know your numbers with labs

You cannot manage what you are not measuring. Because eating less over months can quietly lower certain nutrient levels, periodic bloodwork is one of the smartest things you can do. Ask your doctor to check the basics, including iron and B vitamins, especially if you are feeling run down or noticing changes like increased hair shedding. Labs take the guesswork out and let you act on facts rather than assumptions.

How to choose a supplement worth taking

When you are eating less, a well-chosen supplement helps protect your nutrient intake so the gaps do not widen week after week. But supplements are not all the same, and it is worth knowing what to look for rather than grabbing whatever is on the shelf.

Look for a formula built for your actual situation, which here means eating less while your body changes, not a generic one-size-fits-all multivitamin. Look for meaningful, sensible amounts of the nutrients that tend to run low when intake drops, rather than a long label of trace everything. Look for a form you will actually take consistently, because the best supplement is the one you do not abandon. And look for transparency about what is in it and who formulated it, so you know the thinking behind the formula.

These are the exact standards I held myself to when I formulated the Jealthy Weight Loss Support Multivitamin. I built it for people who are eating less on a weight loss journey and need to protect their nutrient intake while they do. It is not a replacement for food or for protein, and it is not a shortcut. It is daily nutrient support designed for the reality of eating less.

Put it together early

You do not need to do all of this perfectly. You need to do the basics consistently. Protein at every meal, water throughout the day, resistance training a couple of times a week, periodic labs with your doctor, and daily nutrient support to cover the gaps. Set these habits early and they compound, making the whole journey steadier and helping you protect your health while you change your body.

This is exactly what I built Jealthy to support. If you want daily nutrient support formulated for people eating less on a GLP-1, the Weight Loss Support Multivitamin and the Wellness Duo are where I would start.
